The café-restaurant Waldhaff, nestled in the Grunewald forest, is an iconic place. Known for its simple yet tasty cuisine, it attracted many visitors seeking nature and hearty meals. In 2023, the Commune of Niederanven acquired this historic building, formerly a toll house, to revitalize it. Disused since 2018, it holds significant potential for a future that respects its heritage. A dialogue compétitif has been initiated to rethink this space, with the aim of creating a Luxembourgish brasserie integrated into its green environment.

This project faces several challenges:

  • Heritage protection: The café-restaurant Waldhaff is classified as communal heritage and is located in a Natura 2000 area, requiring an environmentally-friendly approach to its historic architecture.
  • Spatial constraints: Designing a modern kitchen and spaces suitable for sufficient capacity to ensure the project's economic viability requires creative architectural solutions.

In February 2024, the Commune of Niederanven launched a European call for applications to select teams participating in the project development phase. Among the eight applications received, the selection committee shortlisted three teams for the second phase of the dialogue compétitif:

  • Fabeck Architectes – Schroeder & Associés – Goblet Lavandier & Associés

  • Moreno Architecture & Associés – Simon-Christiansen & Associés – Building Solutions & Consulting – ATI Concept

  • Forma architectes – SGI Ingénierie – Luxcuisines Wecker

These three teams drew up proposals for the redevelopment of the café-restaurant Waldhaff, which were presented at a colloquium on 24 September 2024. The selection committee, made up of experts, representatives of the Commune, the HORECA sector and the Institut National pour le Patrimoine Architectural, unanimously selected the Fabeck Architectes - Schroeder & Associés - Goblet Lavandier & Associés as the winning team.

The aim of the competition was to select the best team for the implementation of the project. The next step follows: The design will be further developed and adjusted to obtain the required environmental protection permit
